Photo Thursday: Open Air Shopping

There is an outdoor market (along with a few other small shops) near the Swazi Candle factory. We didn't have enough time here, in part because the grounds had some interesting plants, like these bird of paradise, that called for a second look.

Actually, I just have a thing for bird of paradise. Like bougainvillea, it is one of the plants I want to be able to grown in my garden some day. (Because that would mean I am living somewhere warm!)

This isn't a great photo, but I like the way it obscures the vaguely English two-story shop in the background. . . sort of a "where am I photo."

Black Rhino Rescue

We saw lots of white rhinos when we were in South Africa - far more than I expected to see - and some in very unexpected places, like this group in Kruger.

What we didn't see were black rhinos.

(White rhinos aren't white, but are "wide lipped" grazers who eat grass. Similarly, black rhinos aren't black, but they are browsers who eat shrubs and brush.)

Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve is famous for its white rhino breeding program, but we learned while we were there that black rhinos have been much more challenging to re-establish. The park regularly relocates rhinos, but I didn't hear anything about transporting rhinos by helicopter!

Today the Picture Show on NPR features images of black rhinos being transported via helicopter to new, safer homes. They are great images!
