Bicycle service infor those on the go in Salzberg

While we waited for the bus, local residents stopped by to have their bikes checked and tuned.

This was on a main transit corridor where the street was lined with bus stops and large bicycle parking areas. Transit in general seemed to be a well-linked and easy-to-use . . . although the bus we were waiting for was really, really late. Of course, that gave me more time to take pictures, so wasn't entirely bad.

Protests in Egypt

Wishing the best for my friends in Egypt as the country erupts into violence.

I love Egypt, with it's complex stew of culture and history.

Some of the of the largest protests have occurred in the area right around my hotel in Cairo and would have been clearly visible from my deck overlooking the Nile (more would have been visible from the hotel bar).

Good, up-to-date coverage can be found on the New York Time's Lede blog.

DC From My Window

Yesterday and the day before:

10:00 this morning (note the snow):

5:00 this afternoon (snowing again):

Now (9:00 p.m.):

There isn't a moving car visible anywhere. Connecticut Ave is completely still, as are the surrounding streets. It's sort of amazing. And lovely. I wish I had boots.

Spring in Death Valley

So our “winter” trip is starting to come together – for March/April when we can take in the flowers in the California deserts.

We are starting with Death Valley.

I'm hoping for wildflowers too.
