Along the Way

Previous post: Good-bye, Ninilchik

We are back on the Sterling Highway again, headed across the Kenai to the Seward Highway and up to Hope.

Instead of staying on the main highway, we switch over to the Skilak Lake Loop Road, a lovely sliver of highway that runs through a bit of Alaska that reminds me of a wilder, more isolated, and more beautiful version of northern Minnesota. I think this is what Alaska was like 30 or 40 years ago. It is gorgeous, but we seem to have it pretty much to ourselves.

As we travel, the day turns dark and rainy. Even so, the views along the Hope Highway are stunning.

Of course, I’m most entranced with the ripples left in the mud by the retreating tide.
