Trying to get ready for Utah

It has been hot here and I feel like I am behind on everything, but I know I have to finish getting ready for the Utah trip soon -- too soon.

Actually, I'm already about as organized as I have ever been for a trip. After checking the web religiously every day (sometimes twice a day) and making a panicked phone call when a reservation wasn't showing up, I have managed to snag all the national park lodgings I was hoping for (two days in Bryce, one in Zion, two at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and three at Mesa Verde). I also have the night outside Cap Reef set up. I even have my dinner reservations set up for every night but one. I've also reserved a half-day raft trip.

What I don't have reserved:

The first night in Salt Lake. We arrive really late and I don't want to be trying to find something at midnight, so I'll try Priceline for that this weekend.

The night near Monument Valley. The ranch in Valley of the Gods is closed that week, the traditional adobe place is booked that night, and the guest house by Bluff only has bunk beds left, and everything else is really boring and too expensive.

The last night in Moab, but I've got a place scoped out, so I just need to call. There are lots of options there, even if most of them are overpriced for what you get.

A mule ride into Grand Canyon. I may just wait and reserve that when I get there -- they have a couple of options and we should be there early enough the day before.

Horseback riding in Bryce. If it stays this hot, my interest level might be pretty low, so I'm still thinking about it.

A special Centennial tour in Mesa Verde. They were already booked up when I went to reserve it a month or two ago, but they have lots of little special tours available, so we'll do some of those instead. That is probably about all I'm physically fit enough to do anyway :-)

Of course, I also need a different bag for my camera gear, a few more pairs of shorts that fit, and a replacement contact lens (I broke one Sunday), but I'm getting there. I guess I'll be set. If we had to leave today, we'd be fine.

It is hot out there right now -- 109 in Zion (but much cooler in Bryce, Mesa Verde, and other high spots, with night temps in the 50s in some places) I'm glad I'm not camping though.

It's going to be a great trip.
